1st June....the week leading upto Saturday was too wet for cricket with Chester midweek and youth team games cancelled (Half term!) The 1sts travelled to Llandudno to eventually win by 36 runs! It took Danny Williams bowling his one and only first team over of the season (so far?) to get Llans final wk off the last ball of the day. G`ford had scored 208 for 6 dec with Chris Ellwood, Matt Cree and Sean Richards all passing 40. Apart from Danny`s wk the other main wk takers were the Bells (John 3 for 29, Gareth 3 for 39). The 2nds had a 10 wk win at home to Bala 1sts, who batting first could only get 96. Jack Bunkell (2 wks) James Williams (4) and Matt Daulby (3) Dan Griffin only took 1 wk......off 12 overs for just 7 runs!! Ian Weaver (42) and Jack Bunkell (50) then knocked off the runs. On Sunday the Under 9 (girls) lost narrowly to Pontblyddyn by just 6 runs....extras the difference. Unfortunately the Boys Under 9`s game was called off at Marchweil
June 8th. The week leading up to the 8th was one of unbroken sunshine with the youth teams enjoying great success. U11`s, 13`s in the Welsh Cup and U15`s all beating Pontblyddyn with the U13`s beating Brymbo in the league. Notable batting perfomances included not out 30`s from Ryan Williams, Scott Hodgeson, Zac Dobie, Sion Thomas and Sam Thompson in the U13`s and Chris Mullock in the U15`s. Sunday saw our two U9 teams play one another...great game! Senior cricket started well with the midweek team beating Castle Cement by 10 wks (Danny Williams 50+ no). In the NWCL the 1sts once again scored big but could not bowl out the opposition..this time Pwllheli. G. 260 for 8 with Arthur Thomas (80), Joe Benson (65) and Chris Ellwood (49). Pwll reached 195 for 5 off their 50 overs. (3 wks for Simon Perry). The 1sts moved upto 3rd in the league. The 2nds lost by at Llangollen after being bowled out for 187 in just 30 overs...George Morris a brilliant 96 (stumped!) and Matt Daulby (36). Llan passed our score in the 52nd over! The Sunday Eleven won by 20 runs at Marchweil, Mullock snr top scoring with 50 with Ian Crumplin in his first innings in 2 years falling 47 runs short of his maiden half century (sorry Ian!)
Week upto the 15th.. Sunday (9th) saw a keenly fought inter club Under match with A vs B team. Not sure who won but it was good to watch. Under 11`s then had an easy win over Corwen with the 13`s narrowly beating Llay (Rob Clarks 50 the highlight). No game for the 15`s. Senior cricket started with a midweek win over Shotton by 3 wks. In the NWCL the 1sts acheived another winning draw, this time against Bangor.....a good game this one!. Batting first we scored 166 with Dannny Williams top scoring with 51. Bangor then needed (in their 53 overs) 4 to tie off the last ball for 9 wks down..they got 1! Chris Ellwood took 4 of the wks to fall.
The 2nds...less said the better, lost by 9 wks at Carmel 1st (51 all out)
1st June....the week leading upto Saturday was too wet for cricket with Cheste
Sunday 16th to 23rd June. Youth team games a plenty this week. Sun 16th saw both U9 teams winning against Pontblyddyn. Monday the 11`s won cmfortably (by 106 runs at Ruthin). That night the U15`s played Northop in the semi final of the Welsh Cup (N Wales Region) suffering a heavy loss. As bad as they were on Monday, they produced their best performance of the season on Wednesday to beat and replace Buckley at top of the table. Batting first G`ford totalled 157 for 2 with Jacob Roberts, Matt Thompson and Chris Mullock all retiring on 40+. Buckley were then bowled out for 66. Simon Bent recording remarkable figs of 1.5 overs, 5 wks for 9 runs....a hatrick (and 3 Mullock stumpings) included in his 5. The U13`s had a good and a great win, a 7 wk win over Pont in the League (Zac Dobie 31no) and an 8 run win over Northop in the N Wales Regional final of the Welsh Cup. They go onto represent N Wales in the Newport final on July 14th....see Neils reports in the meet the teams section.
Senior cricket...both Sunday games were cancelled. The midweek team move 3 points clear at the top of their league with 12 run win over the `Outlaws`(Alex said his bowling won the game). The 1st made the long journey to windy Bodedern. Batting first (again) they reached 195 for 8 ( 4 bats scoring 20 +)...a few runs below par perhaps. The home team secired a 5 wk win thanks to a brilliant innings of 136no by opener Jackson. The 2nds had a superb win at top of the table Denbigh. Jack Bunkell (3 wks) Harry Morris (2) helped restrict Denbigh to 144 for 6. Bunks (48) and George Morris (33no) saw G`ford to 145 for 6.
The last week in June saw both U11 and 13`s matches conceded by the opposition. The U15`s however recorded a 7 wk win over Chirk. G`fords total of 75 for 3 included 23no from Sam Thompson and 30 from Chris Mullock. All three senior league matches were wins for Gresford. The midweek team remain top after a 7 wk win over Chester Outlaws. The 1sts bowled Buckley out for just 87 with Sean Richards recording his best ever bowling figures of 13 overs, 6 mds, 18 runs and 6 wks (brilliant). Gresford knocked off the runs for the loss of 1 wk. The 2nds 10 wk win over Llay must be the best result of the week. Having bowled Llay out for 105 (Daulby 4 wks, Coops, Harry M and Bunks 2 wks each), G`ford replied to pass this score without losing a wk....Rory Benson (69no, Jack Bunkell 37no). Llay did get some revenge on Sunday with a comforatble win in the friendly at Llay (again Rory topscored with 70!)
The final youth team games on Sunday saw the boys beat Brymbo with the girls losing at Chirk
