Gresford CC Aug 2011 Newsletter

As we enter the summer holidays, a quick update of GCC team progress is perhaps in order. The senior teams are currently 4thand 2nd in their respective Leagues with the mid week team guaranteed promotion, hopefully as champions….well done to capt Morse and his team. The Sunday Eleven offers all a game! Youth team success continues, with pride of place going to the U13`s who recently represented N Wales in the Welsh Cup finals held at Newport CC. Gresford eventually finishing runners up to a very strong Cardiff side. The U13`s are also champions of the NE Wales League (south). The U11`s are in a similar position in their league with the U9`s currently in 2ndplace. Both teams go on to the NE Wales final held at Halkyn CC on the 21stAug. The U15`s have completed their league fixtures finishing 3rdin Div 1 of the NE Wales League…they also won the NE Wales region of the Welsh Cup…rain and school trips prevented them playing Colwyn Bay in the N Wales final. The playing side……pretty good!

Fixtures….details are available on our website….one special events to look out for is the Ladies vs Chairman`s Eleven Match (Sunday 28thAug). Training (?) for the Ladies will recommence on Sunday morning 7thAug….Denise and the Linda`s have details, new recruits are most welcome.

NEW NETS

The proposed new net development will hopefully go ahead in the Autumn…..funding from the ECB is in place as is our contribution to this £45,000 scheme.

Why do we need them? Currently we only have one usable (and ageing) practise net which cannot be used on match days which can be 5 days a week! Re positioning the nets at 90 degrees to the existing site will increase the outfield area available and it will tidy up this area of the ground

FUND RAISING…….is an ongoing area requirement for our club. Subs bring in monies as does the sponsorship by players of senior teas which this year are being prepared by the ladies (led by Denise M and Linda Baker…thank you). Sponsorship is always welcome…any ideas/contributions.

The recent `clothes` donation raised £100 ish and is still ongoing.

Fundraising allows us to run the club for all age groups; it also allows us to apply for grant aid in support of our ambitions and projects such as our new nets. We have also recently received a £500 grant from Swalec for coaching equipment

Youth Team finals

As winners of their respective leagues our Under 11`s and 13`s are competing in the play off finals at Halkyn CC on Sunday 21st Aug. Both games are against Northop CC. The U11`s start at 12.30pm with the U13`s at 3.45pm.

Supporters welcome

Winners of these games will go on to represent NE Wales in the regional finals at Mochdre on Sun 11th Sept. the will play the winners of the Eryri region

Advance notice....the NE Wales Presentation Evening will be held at Brymbo CC on Friday 21st Oct

Gresford Under 13's win NEW league playoff finals

On Sunday 21st August the U13's triumphed against Northop U13's in the finals of the North East Wales leagues. Gresford now move on to play the winners of the N.West Wales competition on 11th September.

Howling gail, rain, sunshine and dodgy light could not deny GCC U13's from becoming champions. Skipper Morris struck first with his second delivery to dispatch Pwllheli's opener (1-16). Cooper'S' at the pavillion end put in a gargantuan effort bowling against the wind also took a wicket (1-15). Luke Sawney (1-15) and Charlie Maclosky (0-9) also battled courageously against the elements. The spin attack of Jacob Roberts (2-3) and Adam Sawney bowling a final maiden over shored up the defences from the other end. Chris Mullock showed his class behind the stumps with a stumping and 3 run outs leaving the opposition floundering on 65-8. Fielding standards were good with Will Roberts, Lewis Williams and Tom Webb all playing their part. Charlie takes the plaudits with an excellent low catch to dismiss Pwllheli's dangerman.

GCC's openers Matty Thompson (6) and Jacob Roberts (28) quickly set about the run chase, with 30 on the board before the loss of the first wicket. Chris Mullock and Luke Sawney looked rock solid as they worked the opposition around the field and kept the scoreboard ticking over, building pressure. Luke knocked the ball over the boundary rope to bring victory to Gresford with 3 overs to spare.

Pete Evison presented the champions shield to skipper Harry Morris and Jacob was awarded the 'man of the match' trophy chosen by the umpires. As the curtain falls on a fantastic season WELL DONE to the U13 squad from a very very contented coach!

A great weekend

A huge thankyou to Linda and Lynda who organised a hugely successful bag packing event at Asda, Wrexham. Sat (22nd Oct) and Sun (23rd) saw a group of club members man the tills. Customers of Asda were most generous allowing us to collect just over £1000..a brilliant effort. Thanks to all who volunteered their time, to Asda staff for their advice and to Barclays Bank who will match our effort to the tune of £750.

The previous evening Gresford youth turned out in force at the NE Wales Junior Cricket Presentation Evening. GCC were well represented in all age group squads with the club picking up no less than five league trophies. We are League Champions at Under 11`s and Under 13`s for the outdoor summer league for NE Wales (south) The Under 13`s went on to win the N vs S playoff and then to become N Wales Champions. In the indoor league we are champions at Under 12, 14 and 16 levels.

A great weekend for GCC!

A packed Memorial Hall witnessed the Annual Awards Ceremony

The senior awards were introduced by congratulating the captains on the success of the Firsts (3rd in League and runners up in th Les Tunnah Trophy), Seconds (League Champions) and the midweek team (League Champions)

Captains and officials then presented trophies as follows

1st Team Player of Season.....Sean Richards

2nd ......Ian Weaver/James Williams

Midweek .......Dave Baker

Performance ........Rory Benson

Clubman ........James Williams

John Gill Trophy ......... Ian Weaver

and the most prestigious award of the `Brick` went to George Morris

Youth Team coaches outlined a most successful season with the U13`s leading the way finishing runners up in the Welsh Cup
