Match Report | U13's CLOSE CALL AT CHIRK - SKIPPER COMES TO THE RESCUE Too many games in close proximity! (two in two days), take one game at a time! the players are tired! youv'e heard them all but what a close fought match at Chirk this week. GCC batted first as the away team and got a slap round the face with a wet fish. Top five wickets fell for less than 20 on the board with shots that reminded me of widow twankey's facial features, just down right UGLY!!. The Chirk boys were full of it. Not until skipper Matty Thompson and Will Roberts came in at six and seven did any sort green shoots of recovery beging to show. Thompson's innings of 30 n/o was classy, as he moved the field around with an array of shots. Will looked to be going well but got caught off an over ambitious drive when trying to push the score along. The Mighty Quinn then 'playing for his average' came in making a steady 5 not out, his second not out in two days! With one player not turning up Matty was called back from retirement and took the score along to reach 88 in the nineteenth over. THIS WAS GOING TO BE CLOSE!!!! Xan opened the bowling from the chocolate factory end, the question was, 'had he taken on too many biscuits at the interval' as more and more appeared from his pockets?' Well he let his bowling do the talking, taking a wicket off his third delivery, the Chirk dangerman on his way back to the pavillion. Could there be a chance for us? Tommy Roberts at the other end also bowled well. Will Roberts then helped himself to two other wickets for just six runs in his spell, but the other Chirk opener was still there and scoring freely, with the score creeping up to 48 off twelve overs - HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS, as the parents started the nervous walk around the boundary rope trying to look calm!! High standard fielding had to be the key, Will and Sam Postle at mid wicket set them for others to follow, with more and more long barriers on show...by some!! Sam Thompson slowed everything down and pitched his bowling against the dangerous Chirk batsman. Slow loopy spinners were sent up, the batsmans eyes lit up as he charged one, missed it and before the crowd could shout, 'he's behind you' the bails were taken off by the skipper behind the stumps, he was gone, just a glimmer of hope, but Chirk were within touching distance. Who was the 'turn to' bowler to see it out.... Cooper 'man', yes Jack was the man, with a great exhibition of bowling at the death. He took two wickets in three overs conceeding just seven runs as Chirk looked to push on. Chirk were all out for seventy six.... good contest and well done to Chirk for preparing the grass wicket for the boys to play on. |
